Yes… it’s Tuesday and a slight shift in announcing this week’s Foodie Freebie! It’s been quite a hectic weekend and my husband declared yesterday as a day off from the internet/blogging so we could spend some quality time. I definitely enjoyed being away but there’s a freebie to be given out to a lucky reader!
This week, we’ve been experiencing some cool temperature here in Chicago reminiscent to fall weather. It makes me want to bake all day and fill the house up with the aroma of fresh baked treats! Well this week, I’m featuring a favorite company of mine when I have baking needs – King Arthur Flour.
Started in Boston in 1790 and now based in Norwich, Vermont, Americaโs oldest flour company has grown from a regional staple to a brand known nationwide not only for its high-quality flours but for our passion in sharing the joy of baking; from a small mail-order business with five employees in 1990 to the premier baking resource with nearly 200 employees today; from a family-owned operation for five generations to a 100 percent employee-owned business. King Arthur Flour – the Bakerโs Catalogue offers more than 1,000 professional-grade baking tools and ingredients through its catalogue, online at kingarthurflour.com/shop, and at The Bakerโs Store in Norwich, Vermont. – KAF site
Did you know King Arthur Flour is Americaโs oldest flour company, founded in 1790? To put it into context, George Washington had just been elected to his first term in office when it was founded!
This week’s Foodie Freebie is a subscription to King Arthur’s Flour Mix ‘n Magic Baking Club! For the month of September, a lucky reader will receive King Arthur mixes and ingredients needed to do some delightful bakingโin one special package. This month’s package will include whole-grain baking mixes including:
Whole Grain Buttermilk Bran Muffins – “These golden buttermilk muffins are enriched with a healthy hit of fiber.”
Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies – “Oatmeal-cranberry cookies feature the sweet, nutty taste of oats, and the tang of dried cranberries.”
Soft Molasses Cookies – “Old-fashioned molasses cookies are delightfully chewy and nicely spicy.”
Date Bars – “Rich, moist, sweet date filling spooned onto a tender oatmeal crust, topped with streuselโnow THATโS comfort food!”
– Giveaway is only for those who live in the United States – my apologies to my international readers!
– You must have a valid email address (within your comment or blog link) so that you can be contacted if you win.
To enter the giveaway, leave a comment answering:
– What is your favorite food to bake? (Bread, cookies, cakes, scones, something else?)
Deadline: Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 12 midnight CST.

What a fun giveaway for bakers!
I love baking cookies! ๐
I love baking cake and making the whole house smell delicious!
I love baking breads, though I don't do it often. The house smells so great when it's done!
i love love love to bake cookies..tons and tons of cookies..
Oh, I LOVE KAF. Ha, apparently I love them so much I shorten the name to an acronym. ๐
My favorite thing to bake is plain old whole wheat bread. KAF recipe, in fact. It's nice having a yeast recipe so in the bag that I keep little containers of the mixed dry ingredients in the freezer so when I want to make bread, I just dump the liquid then that container into the bread machine.
Hey, I only use it for the mix and raise! :p
My favorite item to bake is banana bread. I love to add nuts, chocolate, etc… I make sure that every time I bake it, I have enough for my house and enough to give away.
My favorite thing to bake is my in-law's "Crazy Cake" we prepare for Jake, my stepson who has severe food allergies.
He is allergic to eggs, nuts, treenuts, shellfish, canteloupe, watermelon.
It is quite a task to constantly check everything to make sure these types of foods are not used in anything Jake eats.
The crazy cake was a popular cake baked during the depression and does not call for eggs.
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups cold water
I really enjoy the taste of it as it has its own distinctive moist chocolate taste if prepared the right way!
I'm by no means an expert baker yet..but the first thing that I learned to bake – banana bread/muffins, remain my favorite. They are easy, delicious and come out delicious every time!
I used to do a lot of quickbreads- so many different sweet and savory options. Recently though, I've overcome my fear of yeast and have been baking bread, pizza and rolls like crazy!
I love baking cakes or cookies. I am very interested in baking bread. Your site inspires me to try!
I love to make muffins!!!
I love hosting brunch for friends, and one of my favorite things to bake is a blackberry cream cheese coffeecake I discovered at a B&B in wine country a couple of years ago. It's fun switching up the flavors with whatever jam or perserves I have on hand- strawberry, peach, blueberry. Mmmm, maybe I'll make one this weekend!
I love baking sweets, but in the fall, pumpkin breads and muffins are always on the list!
i love making cupcakes, people love them and they're so fun to dress up!
I love baking in general. It's something that's been passed to me from my mom. My mom used to do all of the baking for our family. She would make the best carrot cake and banana bread. So now that she's retired, she's made me the head baker and wanna-be pastry chef for the family. It's fun!
Biscuits or cornbread, but I also really love muffins.
Hope pizza dough counts, 'cause that's my favorite bread to make. Although I have a weakness for chocolate layer cake too. I'm guessing we feel the same way about low carb diets!
I love baking cookies. It's so easy and it tastes so much better than storebought!
Breads are definitely my favorites – quick breads, yeast breads, I love them all.
I love to bake in general, but cookies are probably my favorite. Everyone likes cookies, so they are a definite crowd pleaser!
I'm jealous of your cooler temperatures! Although it is only supposed to be in the LOW 90's here this week.
I absolutely love to bake cakes… preferably tall delicious layer cakes!

I love baking yeast breads. There's something therapeutic to hand-kneading dough at the end of a long day.
Scones would be a close second though.
I love baking cupcakes!
Bread, bread, bread ! Cookies also ๐
I love baking cakes, I'm trying to improve my decorating skills.

I loooove to bake bread! It makes the whole house smell amazing, and there are so many possibilities for meals with it. And my kid loves it, too! ๐
My favorite thing to bake is chocolate chip cookies (because my favorite thing to eat is warm, gooey cookies fresh from the oven!).
Cookies! Because you don't have to worry about them rising like you do with cakes or bread. Plus if all else fails, you can always just eat the dough!
i love baking pretty much anything. But cupcakes seem to be my favorite right now ๐
Like to bake cookies.
My baking favorites depend on the season. In spring and summer I love baking the light fruity things. While fall and summer i'm all about baking with the pumpkin and pies
Today has been a bread baking day, but you'll usually find me baking cakes!
I love making cookies, cakes and desserts. I come from a family of 4 boys and only one girl. I loved baking and having my brothers eat up every last crumb of whatever I made.
